Group D Preview

Hello. This is sporthub, and welcome to our group d preview for this year's world cup, which will be contested by argentina, iceland, croatia, and nigeria. Now let's discuss the teams, starting with argentina.

They were able to get third in qualifying from a very tough confederation, which had a big ending. This will be their 17th appearance.

They've won it all twice, and as of today they sit fifth in the fifa world rankings. After that is iceland. Their group was a bit tough, but they comfortably won their group, giving them their first ever world cup appearance.

As of today, they are 22nd in the fifa world rankings. Next are the blazers, or croatia. Also in iceland's group, the croats finished runner-up, which resulted in them playing greece in the uefa second round.

They won 4-1, and qualified for the fifth time. Their first appearance was in 1998, where they finished third in the whole tournament, and as of today, they are 18th in the fifa world rankings.

Lastly are the super eagles, or nigeria. They qualified by topping their group in the caf third round. This is their sixth appearance in the tournament, and as of today, they are 47th in the fifa world rankings.

Now let's look at the squads, starting with the argentines. Their defense is barely the group's best, but they're still good, featuring nicolas tagliafico, otamendi, and marcos rojo. They also have a pretty good midfield with ever banega, milanista lucas bigla, javier mascherano, psg's lo celso, and west ham's manuel lanzini.

They also have a solid front three, containing messi, di maria, and either aguero or paulo dybala. After that is of course iceland. In goal is hannes halldorsson who plays for randers.

The defense contains cb ragnar sigurdsson who has solid european experience, and who knocked england out of the euros. And then there's of course gylfi sigurdsson.

Not much to say about him, other then he isn't a one-man team. Then, on the attack is augsburg's alfred finnbogason, who is iceland's 2nd highest active scorer.

There seems to be as much talent as teamwork. Next are the blazers. In goal they have monaco's subasic. At defense is lfc's dejan lovren. Then, in the midfield is luka modric, ivan rakitic, and marcelo brozovic.

They also have a big front three with mandzukic, ivan perisic, and nikola kalinic. And lastly are the super eagles. They don't really have anyone notable on defense, except for chelsea wingback victor moses.

The midfield contains wilifred ndidi, and the attack consists of ahmed musa, kelechi iheanacho, and alex iwobi. Now it's time to predict the table. In last are nigeria. They are nothing like the 2014 team.

In 2014, they were also a pot 4 team then, but iceland and croatia right now are much better than bosnia and iran back then. Their offense consists of youngsters who hold absolutely no leadership, and victor moses and wilifred ndidi have a much bigger job of defending.

Yes they beat argentina, but based on their team quality and other fixtures, that can only mean so much. And then once again, with the amount of talent from other teams in the group, things aren't looking too well for them.

Now we're wondering who will be in third, because this is one of those groups. Drumroll, please. Iceland. You might be a little bummed out since iceland are one of the world cup's most storied teams, but that's just my prediction.

A group of guys with driven determination, confidence, and teamwork can only go so far. From their population, they can only produce so many good footballers.

Population will be a big setback for this team forever unless something of course happens. However, they should go home proud, and they should try to build on their success based on current and future players.

In second, is then of course croatia. Come on, i'm not that crazy guy. I predicted iceland for a while, but I revised after looking at the squad and their competition. They have another cameroon-like team in nigeria, but in 2014, mexico had a not bad squad and had serious intentions of making sure they advanced to the knockouts.

You tell me if iceland has that. They might have serious intentions, but still. They have a few new faces with not much decline, and therefore they should be able to get the job done.

Of course they were in pot 2, but I just don't see an early exit again. And then of course, our group winners will be argentina. While they don't look like too big of a first pot team, and while they likely won't win the world cup, I didn't take much time to decide this.

That's of course becuase of their amazing attack, and other key figures. However, because of their many greats aging, and because of their lack of new talent coming in, things aren't looking too good for argentina's future.

They should be prepared going into the knockouts though, with a possible chance of getting another semifinals appearance. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this preview.
